New Preservation Station Should be Open by Winter

After almost eight months working to rehabilitate the former downtown hotel and storefront at 213 Valley St. into a warehouse, volunteers with the Heritage Trust for Preservation and Restoration of Historic Burlington still have many long months of work ahead of them.
But there is an end in sight, said project organizer Dennis Wilson of Burlington during an interview Sunday from inside the building.
As long as volunteers keep showing up, Wilson predicts Preservation Station could be moving into its new home as early as this winter. Preservation Station is the store from which the nonprofit group sells materials salvaged from old buildings. It’s currently located at 923 Osborn St. and open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every second and fourth Saturday of the month.
So far, about $78,000 has been spent renovating the Valley Street building, and Heritage Trust anticipates another $46,000 will be needed to finish it, Wilson said.
Officials plan to pay for the remaining costs with a $15,000 Iowa Main Street challenge grant funded through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, $15,000 in community donations and $15,000 from the group’s general funds, Wilson said.
