Preservation Iowa's programs recognize preservation efforts and concerns across the state and provide assistance to preservationists and entrepreneurs in their efforts to revitalize Iowa's historic resources.
Since 1996, Preservation has recognized exceptional preservation efforts across the state through our Preservation at Its Best Awards. Typically, the call for nominations is posted during the winter, the deadline is in the early spring, and awards are given as part of Preservation Month in May. Award categories include the best in residential, commercial, public, sustainability, adaptive use, and rural preservation, as well as special awards for community effort and individual preservationist.
Since 1995, Preservation has recognized the special buildings and historic sites that are slowly and gradually slipping away through our list of Iowa's Most Endangered Properties. The call for nominations is posted during the fall and the new list is announced in our winter issue of the The Iowa Preservationist.
Preservation Iowa is partnering with Iowa MicroLoan, the National Trust Loan Fund, and Main Street Iowa to create the Main Street Development Loan Fund. This national pilot project is designed to support small business entrepreneurs that locate and grow within selected historic commercial districts by working with local lenders. During its first year, the pilot project involves the Main Street Iowa districts of Bloomfield, Charles City, Greenfield, Iowa Falls, Sac City, and Valley Junction in West Des Moines.
