Endangered: County Annex Building / Former Post Office

Preservation Iowa's 2020 Most Endangered List: County Annex Building / Former Post Office, Jasper County

Construction began on the U.S. Post Office at 115 North 2nd Avenue East in 1928 and it operated here from 1929-1972. Following the relocation of the post office, the Jasper County Board of Supervisors purchased the building to house county offices which continues to the present day.

The Neo-Classical Revival structure retains a generally high level of historic integrity and reflects a significant historic period in the life of the community. It is a contributing structure to the Newton Downtown Historic District which was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014.

But there are significant condition issues at present including water damage to the basement foundation, inaccessibility of the SE entrance, and deterioration of the window wells. In fact, the Jasper County Board of Supervisors are currently working to vacate the structure because of the deteriorating conditions. Once empty, it is a significant possibility that a neighboring property owner would purchase the site and demolish the building for private parking.

If interest from a private developer could be engaged for a rehabilitation of the building for private use, it could remove the current threat. Local grants exist that could along with TIF assistance and state grants/tax credits encourage such a possibility.
