Preservation at Its Best Awards

Preservation Iowa recognizes projects annually that exemplify excellence in historic preservation while inspiring others to take action to protect, restore, and celebrate Iowa’s architectural and cultural heritage.  Since 1996, the organization has highlighted outstanding preservation achievements across the state through the Preservation at Its Best Awards. Each year, the awards showcase exemplary projects that safeguard and revitalize Iowa’s historic resources, highlighting the creativity, skill, and dedication of property owners, architects, developers, and community leaders. By honoring these achievements, Preservation Iowa not only celebrates success but also encourages broader engagement in preserving the state’s rich heritage.

Often referred to – perhaps humorously – as the “Oscars” of the Iowa historic preservation community, the Preservation at Its Best Awards celebrate outstanding achievements in preserving, promoting, and revitalizing the state’s historic resources.   Award categories span residential, commercial, public, sustainability, adaptive use, and rural preservation projects, reflecting the diversity of Iowa’s historic resources.  Additional special awards honor exceptional community collaboration, innovative solutions, and individual preservationists whose commitment has made a lasting impact.  By highlighting these achievements, the program not only recognizes excellence but also encourages the broader public to appreciate and support the preservation of Iowa’s architectural and cultural heritage.

These award-winning projects often go beyond preservation alone, demonstrating how historic resources can be thoughtfully repurposed and reintegrated into their communities.  Many projects contribute to local economic growth by revitalizing housing, supporting service industries, and drawing Iowans back into historic downtowns and neighborhoods.  In doing so, they foster community pride, encourage further preservation efforts, and help ensure that Iowa’s rich heritage remains a vibrant and accessible part of everyday life.
