Who We Are

Preservation Iowa is the leading nonprofit organization dedicated to the advocacy, education, and preservation of Iowa’s historic resources. Established in 1991 as the Iowa Historic Preservation Alliance and renamed Preservation Iowa in 2010, it is the only statewide nonprofit organization devoted to historic preservation in Iowa.  As a key partner for property owners, community members, developers, architects, local historic preservation commissions, and preservation advocates, Preservation Iowa works to promote the value of Iowa’s historic places and to ensure their continued vitality.  The organization recognizes preservation achievements and highlights endangered historic resources across the state.  It also offers guidance and support to individuals and communities seeking to preserve and revitalize Iowa’s historic properties. Through its programs and partnerships, Preservation Iowa provides the tools, knowledge, and advocacy needed to protect the state’s heritage and strengthen its communities.

Building on the Past for Iowa’s Future

Our Mission

Preservation Iowa builds partnerships that enhance our economic and cultural future through the preservation of Iowa’s historic resources.

Our Purpose

Preservation Iowa empowers communities and individuals to preserve, promote, and revitalize Iowa’s historic resources through advocacy, education, and statewide partnership.  Specific goals for Preservation Iowa include:

  • To support, broaden, and strengthen the statewide constituency for preservation in Iowa
  • To educate public and private policymakers who affect historic preservation issues at the national, state, and local levels
  • To develop and implement strategies for insuring the preservation of individual and collective historic resources of cultural significance to Iowa
  • To work in partnership with national, state, and local agencies and organizations whose activities impact historic resources.

Building on the Past for Iowa’s Future

At Preservation Iowa, we believe the future of our state depends on creating sustainable, vibrant communities rooted in an authentic sense of place.  Iowa’s historic resources – its main streets, neighborhoods, courthouses, schools, farms, and sites – tell the stories of who we are and form the foundation for our future.  By rehabilitating and reusing these structures, we not only honor our past but also make a lasting investment in Iowa’s future.

Preserving our historic resources is both economically attractive and environmentally responsible.  Restoration and adaptive reuse create jobs, attract businesses, and strengthen local economies – all while reducing waste and conserving materials.  Historic preservation brings new life to communities large and small, offering spaces that continue to serve residents, welcome visitors, and inspire future generations.

To achieve these goals, Preservation Iowa champions the use of powerful revitalization tools such as State and Federal Historic Tax Credits, Redevelopment Tax Credits, Low-Income Housing Tax Credits, and property tax incentives for rehabilitation.  These programs make preservation financially feasible and transformative for communities across the state.

As Iowa’s only statewide nonprofit dedicated solely to historic preservation, Preservation Iowa stands at the forefront of advocacy and education. We work closely with the State Historic Preservation Office and countless partners to expand preservation opportunities, strengthen policies, and ensure that every community – urban or rural – has the resources it needs to protect and celebrate its heritage.

Together, we can create a future where every Iowan benefits from strong, sustainable communities built upon the enduring value of our historic places.
